HOUSTON - A man has been charged with murder in the death of his own child and medical officials say the child was a victim of shaken baby syndrome.

Initially, 28-year-old Jemone Williams was charged with injury to a child. But a judge upgraded the charges and increased his bond amount to $200,000 on Friday. He was arrested Wednesday after the 4-month-old child was pronounced dead at Texas Children's Hospital.

The child's mother left the child with Williams at her apartment when she went to work Tuesday at 3 p.m. and was contacted after 10 p.m. by Williams, who said the baby was sick, according to affidavit for his arrest.

A spokeswoman for Child Protective Services said that both the child and the child's mother tested positive for PCP use in September 2009 when the baby was born, which resulted in CPS awarding custody of the child to the baby's grandmother.

The child was left in the care of the mother on Tuesday by the grandmother, said CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin.
