Gladewater Independent School District accepted the resignations of two teachers this week.

They are Elizabeth Yarborough, a longtime educator at Gladewater High School, who is retiring, and Leigh Calloway, a third-grade teacher at Broadway Elementary School. Both will teach until the end of this school year.

Yarborough taught at the high school during the early 1980s, left the district for several years, and resumed teaching there in 1997.

"This is the time of year when people begin deciding they want to take their lives in different directions, whether that means retirement, working for another district or switching careers," Superintendent Mike Morrison said. "We'll probably have more resignations next month. The number fluctuates from year to year, but it's usually more than two."

Morrison told the board Monday evening that state monitoring of residential facilities within the district began Monday. The Texas Education Agency monitoring primarily affects the Truman W. Smith Children's Care Center, a private facility in the district's boundaries for severely disabled children, he said. It also applies to group homes or foster homes.

In other business, the board:

— Approved an agreement with Upshur County regarding the care of roads within the boundaries of the district;

— Approved an agreement to participate in Region VII ESC Food Service Purchasing Cooperative;

— Adopted textbooks for the 2008-09 school year;

— Renewed contracts for various employees.
