DESOTO, Texas -- DeSoto police said they plan to arrest the mother of a child who died while he was in the care of his parents and charge her with murder.

Jonathan Potts, 12, died on March 25 from blunt force trauma, police said.

Police expect to charge Tracye Nicole Johnson, 34, with a first-degree felony as she allegedly failed to act in preventing the death of her son, police said.

The boy's father, Terrence Potts, was previously arrested on charges of causing an injury to a child. He told investigators that he spanked his son the night before.

DeSoto paramedics were dispatched to the corner of E. Pleasant Run Road and The Meadows Parkway at 10:25 a.m. on March 25.

The boy went into cardiac arrest before being transported to Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas and was pronounced at 1:20 p.m. Paramedics found old bruises and recent cuts on the boy’s body.

The victim has two sisters. Child Protective Services has taken them into foster care.
