Teen FLDS mother delivers boy, will return to foster care

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) - It's a boy -- for 1 of hundreds of young polygamist-sect members taken into custody by Texas.

Child Protective Services says the teenage mother gave birth today to a healthy boy at a hospital in San Marcos.

The birth took place while child welfare officials, Texas troopers and fellow sect members stood watch outside the maternity ward.

CPS spokesman Patrick Crimmins says the mother is "younger than 18" and will remain with her new son in a nearby foster-care facility.

A formal custody hearing will determine the pair's fate sometime before June 5th.

Rod Parker with the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints contends the new mother is 18.

State officials earlier this month raided the Yearning For Zion Ranch near Eldorado and took custody of 463 children to protect them from possible abuse.
