WEBSTER, Texas – A 23-year-old father was arrested Thursday after deputies say his 2-year-old son was spotted roaming in the middle of the road by a passing motorist.
Richard Lenartwicz has been charged with one count of child abandonment.
Harris County deputies were called to the scene in the 2300 block of West Bay Area Boulevard on May 18 by a woman who said she found the child in the street.
The woman told deputies as soon as she saw the boy, she pulled over, grabbed him and called 911.
Another witness told deputies she recognized the boy as her neighbor’s son.
When officers went to the apartment, they said they found the front door open and marijuana on the table, but no one was inside.
According to court documents, one of the officers left and took the boy to CPS, while the other waited for the apartment resident to return.
When that deputy finally spoke with Lenartwicz, court documents say he told the officer he’d left the child at home asleep while he went to pick his girlfriend up from work.
