Jurors this morning heard opening arguments in the felony murder trial of a woman whose newborn died after being found in a hospital bathroom trash can in 2008.
Prosecutors said Genny Granados, 31, gave birth in secret, cut the umbilical cord with scissors she had in her purse and put the child in a trash can.
Defense lawyers for the woman have said she told them she gave birth alone in the bathroom, was cleaning the baby on a changing table, and the baby slipped into the open trash can next to the table. After becoming disoriented and nauseated, she tried to tell hospital personnel what happened, but could not because she only spoke Spanish, her lawyers said.
The baby was born Feb. 9, 2008, in a Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. A custodian cleaning the bloody bathroom found him.
The infant was revived and placed on a respirator until doctors shut off his life support.
