Denials by teen witness in Texas polygamist case a sign that prosecutions will be difficult

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) - A teenage member of a polygamous sect says she's never been married and doesn't have a baby.

She denies church elders are influencing her and wants to fire her lawyer.

Yet the girl -- a daughter of the sect's jailed prophet -- is a key player in West Texas this week as the state's case against members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints moves into criminal court.

A court filing shows that the girl has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury that convenes tomorrow in Schleicher County, opening the criminal side of the state's case.

Attorney Tim Edwards says the girl's attorney, Natalie Malonis, was also subpoenaed.

Edwards is an attorney for the girl's mother who is trying to have Malonis removed from the case.

Child welfare officials in April seized more then 400 youngsters from the Yearning For Zion Ranch near Eldorado, alleging abuse.

The Texas Supreme Court later forced the state to return the children from foster care.

The Associated Press does not usually identify alleged victims of sex abuse.
