HOUSTON (June 28, 2010)—Jury selection was scheduled to begin Monday in Houston in the trial of Abigail Young of Spring who was charged in the death of her preschooler in a case that led to a more aggressive approach by Child Protective Services to investigate alleged sexual abuse.
Prosecutors said she failed to prevent injuries that led to the death last June of 4-year-old Emma Thompson, who suffered a fractured skull.
Weeks before the girl died, a doctor diagnosed the child with genital herpes and notified CPS.
A CPS investigator found no signs of sexual abuse and the girl was not removed from the home.
Young is charged with injury to a child by omission.
Her boyfriend, Lucas Coe, faces trial later on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
