STAFFORD, Texas - A baby is left on a door step at a Fort Bend County apartment.

The baby girl was just two hours old when someone left her on a rug outside a family's front door in the 1000 block of Farrah Lane around 4:15 a.m.

The family just happened to be awake and getting ready for an early morning church service when they heard a knock at the front door.

"My Mom just opened the door and she checked and she got scared and she just closed the door. I was like what happened? She was like there's a newborn a baby. I said 'are you serious?'" says 15-year-old Alishan Prasala.

They brought the baby inside and called 911.

"The baby was transported to Southwest Memorial (Hospital) where she was suffering from hypothermia to a certain degree. She is better now" says Chief Deputy Craig Brady with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.

The baby wasn't wearing a diaper or any clothes when she was discovered. The family who found the newborn lives in a gated apartment community in Stafford.

CPS spokeswoman Gwen Carter told FOX 26 News that the baby was born within two hours of when it was placed in front of the home and appeared to still have blood and fluid from the labor process still on her body.

Deputies believe the baby's mother is a teenager. If you know of anyone who was pregnant or due around this time, sheriff's officers would like to hear from you.

Investigators are also asking medical professionals to contact them if a young woman who recently delivered comes in for treatment.

It is illegal to leave a baby on a doorstep. Under the Baby Moses Law a newborn under 60 days old can be left at a number of safe locations.

"Firestation, police department, sheriff's office, hospital. There's alot of places you can take a child if you can't deal with it but to leave it abandoned on a door step, hoping someone will find it in time to save it's life, is not the proper thing to do" says Brady.

The mother who abandoned the newborn could be charged with felony child endangerment but investigators say they are focused on talking with the woman and not with charging her.

CPS is locating a foster or adoptive family to take in the baby.
