Parents In Jail After Locking Kids In Bathroom

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ? A Dallas husband and wife are in jail, charged with locking their kids in a bathroom for an extended period of time.

Dallas Police arrested 37-year-old Alfred Santiago and 30-year-old Abneris Santiago after being called to an extended stay hotel room in the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway on a domestic disturbance July 3.

Abneris Santiago was reportedly trying to leave her husband. When officers arrived, they found three children, ages 11, 10 and 5, who appeared underweight and emaciated. The three children were taken to Children's Medical Center, where they were found to be severely malnourished.

A fourth child, believed to be an infant, was not admitted into the hospital. All four children are now in foster care.

Texas CPS spokesman Chris Van Deusen says CPS is now trying to determine what the best long term plan for the children will be.

Dallas Police say witnesses tell them the chidren were routinely locked in the bathroom, often going many occasions without being given food. The family had been living in the hotel for about a year.

The parents remain in the Dallas County Jail. Alfred Santiago is being held on a $125,000 bond stemming from an aggravated sexual assault of a child charge. Abneris Santiago is being held on a $50,000 bond for injury to a child.
