FORT WORTH -- A healthy baby boy dropped off at a Fort Worth fire station Tuesday afternoon by a woman saying she couldn’t take care of him anymore has been placed in foster care, Child Protective Service officials said Wednesday.
While the child’s age is unknown, Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman, said doctors believe he is about 2 months old.
Under the Baby Moses law, a baby up to 60 days old may be dropped off at specially designated places, such as a hospital, fire station or police station, with no questions asked and without fear of prosecution.
While it was initially unknown whether Tuesday’s incident would fall under the Baby Moses law because of the uncertainty of the baby’s age, Gonzales said Wednesday, "from what we know right now, it seem like yes, it does fit the definition."
A woman handed the baby over to fire personnel about 2 p.m. Tuesday at Station No. 8, 1101 12th Ave., stating "I can’t take care of him anymore.," fire department officials have said.
The baby was taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center and released Tuesday night to a foster care family, Gonzales said. She said the baby showed no signs of abuse.
"We’re certainly pleased that the child is in great health and he’s in a safe place right now," Gonzales said.
